Environmental issues for food packaging
Food packaging is directly responsible for a broad range of environmental issues, including overcrowded landfills, greenhouse gas emissions, and litter pollution (both on land and in the ocean).
How have some companies marketed their products as sustainable?
Some food packaging companies are marketing their materials as sustainable because their product is made with recycled materials or their product is biodegradable.
What covenant is managing or regulating packaging waste?
The National Packaging Covenant in Australia is
endeavouring to manage packaging waste. This covenant was signed by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council ministers, local government and a range of industries in the packaging supply chain.
What are the three objectives of the NSW Food Authority, Food Act 2003 (NSW)?
The NSW Food Authority administers the Food Act 2003 (NSW), the objectives of which are to:
- ensure food for sale is safe and suitable for human consumption
- prevent misleading conduct in connection with the sale of food
- provide for the application in this state of the Food Standards Code
