Nutrition Energy - Skildum Flashcards
Non protein RQ is above .85 the primary fuel is:
carbs
What are the numerical constraints for overweight and underweight BMI?
BMI < 19 is underweight
BMI > 25 is overweight
What is the difference between BMR and RMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate and Resting Metabolic Rate. Basically they are the same thing, except BMR is measured under a lot more rigorous standard conditions.
It’s the amount of energy your body is expending for simple function of viral organs.
What is Resting Energy Expenditure? How do you calculate it?
REE is simply the RMR plus the thermic effect of food.
RMR x 1.1 = REE
What is total energy expenditure? How do you calculate it?
TEE is REE plus any energy expended in activity, healing, or etc.
TEE = REE x 1.2 for healthy sedentary adult TEE = REE x 1.4 for healthy active adult TEE = REE x 1.6 for trauma recovery
What is RQ?
How do you calculate RQ?
What does the RQ tell you?
RQ = Respiratory Quotient
Vol. CO2 exhaled / Vol. O2 inhaled
RQ is a form of indirect calorimetry.
It ranges from 1.0 for pure carbs to .7 for pure fat oxidation
A mix of fats/proteins/carbs is usually around 8.5
Why is the RQ for fats the lowest and RQ for carbs the highest?
Fats:
Most reduced dietary fuel
(means they require more O2 inhalation for CO2 exhalation)
Carbs
Most oxidized dietary fuel
(Means it requires less O2 inhalation for CO2 exhalation)
Amino acids vary, and end up somewhere in between
