Nutrition Chapter 14 - Water Flashcards
What percent of the body is water?
50-70%
lean tissue contains much more water than fat tissue
Where is water found in the body?
intracellular - in the cells
extracellular - outside the cells (interstitial and intravascular)
What functions does water have in the body?
lubricant, solvent, regulates body temperature, helps remove waste, transports nutrients, metabolic processes, component of body fluids
How does water help regulate body temperature?
sweat ad evaporation
absorbs excess heat - high specific heat
What is water balance?
water in = water out
water out - lungs, feces, urine, sweat
water in - liquids, foods
What is the recommendation for water intake?
varies between individuals by age, gender, pa, climate, diet
men - 3.7L
women - 2.7L
What factors effect thirst?
alcohol, caffeine, medications, illness, lifestyle, environment
How does the thirst mechanism work?
brain receives signals of increased blood osmolality
pituitary gland releases ADH
kidneys decrease blood pressure
angiotensinogen released from liver –> angiotensin I –> angiotensin II –> signals blood vessels to constrict and sodium retention
What is water intoxication?
Intake of too much water w/o electrolytes
kidneys can’t handle all the water
