Nutrition/Biology Processes Flashcards
What happens when you consume carbohydrates:
When you consume carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose, which enters your bloodstream. Insulin is then secreted by the pancreas to increase the rate at which cells absorb glucose to produce energy.
What happens when to much glucose if relased into the bloodstream?
causes a spike in blood sugar (increased amounts of glucose entering blood stream)
How does a blood sugar crash occur?
The body react to a blood sugar spikes by secreting excess insulin to try bring the blood sugar levels back down. To much glucose if removed from the bloodstream making cells not receive enough glucose to convert into energy causing a crash
What are simple carbs
one or two sugar molecules linked together
What does the sympathetic system do?
responses to a stressful/dangerous sistation by preparing body for fight or flight eg accelerate heart rate
what does the parasympathetic system do?
rest and digest state
- Relaxes body after periods of stress or danger
- helps run processes like digestion, when body is in a relaxed state
central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
Includes the nerves that run throughout the whole body. Consits of both somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
somatic nervous system
- carry sensory information or sensations
- includes motor nerve fibers that exit the brain to carry commands for movement to the skeletal muscles.
autonomic nervous system
that regulates involuntary physiologic processes including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion
divided into parasympatheic and sympathic
