Nutrition Flashcards
Sustainable
An activity that can be carried out without making life more difficult for people in the future
Photoautroph
An organism that produce high energy food substances using light (plants, algae, photosynthesis bacteria-> all photosynthetic organisms)
Food chain
A sequence of organism arranged to show their feeding relationships and food energy flow
Trophic level
A position in a food chain
E.g. primary producer, secondary consumer
Chemoautotrophs
Harness energy by oxidizing inorganic substances such as hydrogen sulphide and ions of ammonium and nitrite
Autotrophs
Self- feeders
Heterotrophs
Organisms that cannot produce their own high-energy molecules must gain their energy supplies
Herbivore
An animal that only eats plant food
Rumen
The stomach chamber in which bacteria digest cellulose in ruminants
Carnivore
An organism that gains its food energy from other heterotrophs
Omnivore
An organism that eats plant and animal food
Pasture
An area of land used for grazing livestock
Pesticide
A chemical that is used to kill pest species
