Hormonal Growth + Pest Control Flashcards
Horizontal gene transfer
The transfer of genetic material between organisms without normal breeding taking place. E.g. the transfer of genes that give pesticide and antibiotic resistance between bacteria
Auxin
Group of plant hormones that help vegetative propagation but high doses can cause uncontrolled death and growth so it can be use as herbicide
Gribberlin
A group of plant hormones that have several biological function
- inhibit shoot growth
- stimulate seed germination
- inhibit root growth
- in crase fruit size and grape cluster size
Éthylène
Chemical that stimulate fruit ripening
BST
Bovine somatotropin - an animal hormone used to stimulate milk production (uncertainty of its health effects on human)
Anabolic steroid hormones
A female or male hormone used to increase livestock gross growth efficiency
Endemic pests
A pest that is normally present
Epidemic pests
A pest that is not normally a problem but many become a serious pest when the population suddenly increase
Growth rate
A measure of the growth (increase in body mass) per unit time
GGE
Gross Growth Efficiency. A measure of the efficiency with which food eaten by livestock is converted into body mass
