What are the benefits of breast milk?
Anti-infective and Anti-inflammatory. The immune system is not developed until 4-6 years.
What are the contraindications for breastfeeding?
- Maternal HIV
2. Excessive alcohol or drug use.
When should you breastfeed while taking medications?
Breastfeed before taking the medication to decrease the transfer to the baby. The baby should only be exposed to less than 1% of the mothers dosage.
Is caffeine contraindicated during pregnancy?
NO; but it may make the baby irritable
Differentiate oxytocin from prolactin
Oxytocin: Releases milk from glandular tissue
Prolactin: Stimulates production of milk during first few couple months post-partum
Discuss post-partum milk production.
Supply and demand instead of by prolactin secretion.
What is the alternative to breast milk?
Iron-fortified formula until 12 months.
When can the baby drink water? Honey? Solid Food?
No water until 6 months, no honey until 12 months, no solid food until 6 months.
What are some feeding cues from the baby?
- Sucking with lips
- Chewing on hands
- Crying
What is the proper breastfeeding procedure?
Aim nose towards nipple. Allow nipple to touch roof of the mouth which signals suck reflex.
What is an effective suck?
Mouth opens, brief pause, close mouth around areola and swallow.
How long does a feeding session last?
Lasts as long as a nutritive suck is maintained.
