10 second of rapid shallow breaths followed by 5-10 seconds of not breathing.

Discuss preventative care for a newborn
- Vitamin K
- Hepatitis B
- Eye antibiotic prophylaxis (prevent gonorrhea)
How soon should a newborn be in the doctors office after birth?
Within 2 days; Test for feeding, weight gain/loss, breathing/circulation
Discuss the weight changes of the newborn.
Loses up to 8% of birth weight during the first couple days; Abnormal amount is greater than 10%. During first few weeks, newborn is expected to gain 30-60 grams per day (1-2 oz)
What should be assessed regarding newborn feeding habits?
- Feeding 10-12 times/day
- Loose yellow poop 6-8 times/day
- Jaundice?
- Content for a couple hours after feeding?
How is a newborn’s cardiovascular system evaluated?
- RR (40-60)
- HR (90-180)
- BP (60/40)
- Murmurs?
- Femoral pulses equally strong?
Explain normal physical findings in a newborn?
- Red-reflex in both eyes
- No hypo/hypertonia
- Hips well seated (No Barlow & Ortolani maneuver)

What should parents do to keep the newborn safe?
- Backwards in car seat until 2 yrs old
