What is asepsis?
The absence of bacteria, viruses, or other potentially pathogenic micro-organisms
What is aseptic technique?
A precisely controlled method that aims to prevent contamination by microorganisms when carrying out any invasive procedure when the body’s natural defences have been bypassed.
When should aseptic techniques be used?
Procedures that breach the body’s natural defences. For example: inserting a catheter, dressing a wound.
What are 5 key principles of standard precautions?
Hand hygiene
Use of PPE
Safe use and disposal of sharps
Principles of asepsis (management of invasive devices, administration of medication)
