Inflammatory Process Flashcards
What are the four types of defence barriers?
Anatomy
Physiology
Phagocytosis/ Endocytosis
Inflammation
Give examples of anatomy defence barrier
Skin - mechanical barrier to microbes
Ph 3-5, acidic
Mucous membrane - traps foreign microbes
Give examples of physiological innate defence
Body temperature - fever inhibits growth of some pathogens
Low Ph - acid in stomach kills microbes
Tears - contain lysozyme which destroy bacterial cell wall
What is phagocytosis/ endocytosis
the process where phagocytes eat and engulf/ digest microbes
What triggers the inflammatory process?
Tissue damage, Infection
What are the signs of infection? Think PRISH.
Pain Redness Immobility Swelling Heat
For PRISH, what is happening in the body to cause this?
Pain - Stretching of nerves due to pain
Redness - Increased blood flow to the area
Immobility - Loss of function
Swelling - Increased capillary permeability
Heat - Increased blood low to the area
What is the purpose of the inflammatory response?
Purpose = protective
What chemical mediators are released during the inflammatory process?
Histamine Serotonin Prostaglandins Heparin Bradykinin
Why are NSAIDs (ibuprofen) usually taken during an inflammatory response?
They reduce inflammation by slowing production of prostaglandins
