Functional Method
Task Division, 1930s
allowed care of increased numbers of clients + used advancing technology
Caused fragmented care, no single individual was responsible for the planning of care.
Example of Functional Method
1 takes temp, another does all wound dressings, etc.
Functional Method Today
may be seen today in long-term care facilities.
Case Method
1st method, early 20th century
One client
Lived in client home and assumed household duties.
Total Client Care
4-6 clients, RN,LPN
1970-1980s
Increase RN staffing = decrease death, failure to rescue, cardiac arrest, pneumonia
Shorter stays
Cost effective
Primary Care
1980s One nurse per client from admission-discharge
Associate nurse worked w/same client on the other shifts+ primary nurses day off
Benefit of Primary Care
Continuity of care for the client + job satisfaction
Every nurse was a primary nurse for a few clients + an associate for others
Down side of Primary Care
Nurses forgot how to delegate responsibilities.
Case Management
**Not a system of care deliver, BUT, involves managing client care
Health care services are controlled + monitored carefully
Policies followed + decreased cost
Case manager follows client from diagnostic phase to hospitalization to rehab and back home.
Prioritization
Deciding which needs or problems require immediate action and which ones could be delayed until a later time bc they are not urgent.
Ex of priorization
Breathing problem vs. need to pee
Breathing problem should be prioritized.
