What is an Enrolled Nurse (EN)?

A

Someone who has completed a 2 year Diploma of Nursing. They work under the supervision of a registered nurse and cannot work alone. Typical duties may be recording TPR, helping patients with ADLs etc

What is a Registered Nurse (RN)?

A

Someone who has completed a 3 year Bachelor of Nursing. They have more responsibilities than an EN. They can do things like assessing patients, administering medication, leadership roles etc

A

-EN have two year courses whereas RN have three year courses
-EN have no leadership opportunities whereas RN do

  3. Get patient comfortable. Sitting flat-footed and arm relaxed.
  4. Place cuff above the elbow (bare skin)
  5. Press start on machine
  6. Record reading

A

It is the number of breaths per minute. The normal range is 12-20.

What are the 5 steps for recording Respiratory Rate?

A
  1. Wash your hands/PPE and introduce yourself to the patient
  2. Obtain informed consent
  3. Get patient comfortable. Sitting flat-footed and arm relaxed.
  4. Ask patient to breathe normally
  5. Count breaths by looking at upper respiratory system for 60 seconds

What are reflexes and what are the classifications?

A

Reflexes are a rapid and involuntary movement that is measured by observation.
0 = no response; always abnormal
1 = a slight response; may/may not be normal
2 = a brisk response; normal
3 = a very brisk response; may or may not be normal
4 = repeating reflex = always abnomal

What are the 6 steps for measuring reflexes?

A
  1. Wash your hands/PPE and introduce yourself to the patient
  2. Obtain informed consent
  3. Get patient comfortable. Sitting with back against chair with arms comfortably out in front.
  4. With hammer/side of palm, strike the tendon and observe movement
  5. Bicep and patella
  6. Reflexes are graded from 0-4 with 2 being normal
