What is ACTH?
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a hormone produced by and stored in the anterior pituitary gland
- stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol and androgens. It plays a key role in the body’s response to stress.
AKA -Corticotropin
What are the anti-inflammatory properties of ACTH?
ACTH has anti-inflammatory properties because it targets melanocortin receptors on immune cells. ACTH can inhibit the aggregation of inflammatory cells and change the function of macrophages.
How is ACTH regulated?
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis controls ACTH levels. The hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) when cortisol levels are low, which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete ACTH.
