Why is communication important in a nurse-client relationship?
By using communication skills, you’ll be able to demonstrate caring and gain the client’s trust (development/help of the relationship)
When do we use communication?
- teach client
- health assessment
- handling client’s frustration/anger
- making a referral (family/coworker)
- managing life threatening situations
What are the several levels of communication?
- intrapersonal (with yourself to organize, etc)
- interpersonal (one on one –> with patient)
- transpersonal (within person’s spiritual domain)
- small group (goal directed)
- public (with a large group of people
What are the 5 elements of a communication process?
- referent/stimulus (what motives to communicate with someone)
- sender (person starts communication)
- message (info said by sender to receiver)
- receiver (person who receives message)
- feedback ( receiver sends a message back –> verbal or not, we see if message was understood or not)
is there a difference between verbal and non-verbal communication? if so, what is it?
yes there is and the difference is that there is one that is not expressed with words but with physical expressions like facial, posture, eye movement, etc
What factors influence interactions?
environmental: noise, safety, privacy
personal characteristics: physical appearance, posture, attractiveness
physical/mental status: pain, hunger, angry, overwhelmed, self esteem
cultural: language, customs
