Ensure the patient has something to drink before entering the med room

FIRST CHECK
Once you are in the med room, find the 8am medication drawer for your patient.
Select medications from the drawer one-by-one while looking at the MAR screen

SECOND CHECK
Pull each medication from the drawer one-by-one and hold up to MAR screen to compare (and verify)

Note the parameters needed for medication administration (if applicable)
Navigate to VS flow sheet to obtain VS needed (if applicable)

Enter the patient room and sanitize hands (wash hands)

Introduce yourself to the patient stating your name and roll.
Explain to the patient what you will be doing

Login to EMR and select the correct patient, then navigate to the MAR screen

HARD STOP
Use 2 patient ID’s - Ask name & DOB
Compare to MAR screen FIRST
Compare to patient ID band SECOND

HARD STOP
Ask the patient if they have any allergies (Verify them from MAR)
Verify allergies and compare medications that will be administered to said allergies

Review medications with patient by stating medication names & what they are used for BEFORE OPENING THEM
(This is because patients have a right of refusal)

Scan the computer bar code sticker (SINGLE BEEP ONLY)

Scan patient ID band bar code

THIRD CHECK
Scan medications ONE AT A TIME and verify medication order with:
Right patient
Right medication
Right dose
Right route
Right time

For medications with orders that include parameters: Input parameter data into MAR
Document other things such as: Refusals or other information
Continue doing this until all of the medications for this time are checked

Ask the patient if they take their medications one at a time or all together
do not open meds but place in cup at station for practicum

Ensure that all medications are charted given or not given
Then, close EMR by selecting X on the left side bar
