General needle length:
5/8 in – 1.5 in.
Needle gauges:
20G to 25G (18 gauge if it is oil)
Volume:
1-5 mL (try not to give more than 3 mL)
Two important things to remember:
No aspiration, no massaging - gentle pressure only after injection
Z-Track method:
Pull or shift the skin and underlying tissue down or to one side 1 to 2 cm with your nondominant hand and hold the skin and tissue in this position
Best time to use z-track method:
For iron, elderly with decrease muscle mass,
Vastus lateralis needle length:
5/8 in - 1 in
Deltoid needle length:
5/8 in - 1.5 in
Ventrogluteal needle length:
1 in - 1.5 in
When is the expiration date for a multi-use vial that you have just opened?
24 hours
How much air to inject into the vial:
Same as the desired quantity needed, can add a little bit more to prepare for medication loss
Administration sites:
Deltoid
Ventrogluteal
Vastus lateralis
Ventrogluteal site:
Place palm of hand over the greater trochanter, with fingers facing the patient’s head.
Right hand = left hip; Left hand = right hip
Place index finger on the anterior superior iliac spine
Extend middle finger dorsally, palpating the iliac crest
Then, a triangle is formed, and injection is given in the center of the triangle
IM into Deltoid - Volume should be limited to:
1 mL, but up to 2 mL can be done if necessary
Deltoid site:
Acromion process
3 fingers down
Make a V
Vastus Lateralis Site:
Anterior thigh
Tic-tac-toe method
Go to the outer middle area & inject
Angle of insertion:
90 degrees
