IVXLCDM, letters represent 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. A line above a number is x1000. Can only have three symbols consecutively to denote a number. A subtraction system is used, eg. An I in front of a V would be 4. You will have to worry only about subtraction for 4’s and 9’s.
