Multiplication And Division Flashcards
Multiplication
The total number of objects when the objects are repeatedly added a certain amount of times
Repeated addition model (multiplication)
When a number is repeatedly added N•a=a+a+a… (n times)
Product
The solution to a multiplication problem
Factors
The numbers that are being multiplied
Closure property of multiplication
If a and b are whole numbers, then a•b is a unique whole number
Commutative property of multiplication
For whole numbers a and b; axb=bxa,
The order in which the numbers are multiplied does not matter
Associative property of multiplication
The order of the operation does not change the result. (axb)xc=ax(bx)xc
Distributive property of multiplication
a(b+c)=(ab)+(ac) as well as a(b-c)=(ab)-(ac)
Remainder
The number left over when a number cannot be equally divided
Divisor
The number that is doing the dividing
Quotient
The result of a division question
Sets that are Closed under multiplication
if you can multiply any two elements, and the result is still a number in the set.
Multiplication property of zero
For every whole number (a), (a)x(0)=0
Prime number
An integer greater than one that is divisible by only one and itself
Composite it number
A number that is composed of two or more numbers
