Nuerons And Synaptic Transmisson Flashcards
What are the three types of neurons?and how can you tell the difference between each?
-sensory, short axons and long dendrites
-relay, short axons and short dendrites
-motor, long axons and short dendrites
Function of sensory
Carry message from PNS to CNS
Function of relay
Connect sensory to motor or other relay
Function of motor
Connect CNS to effector e.g muscle
Neurons all have the same basic structure but what are the 4 main components?
-axon
-dendrites
-cell body
-axon terminal
What is the cell body
Contains nucleus and genetic material
What are dendrite?
Branchlike structures from cell body carrying impulses from neurons to cell body
What is an axon?
Carries electrical impulse away from cell body along neuron
( myelin sheath is a fatty layer that proctects axon and the gaps in between are node of fancier which speed up transmission)
What is an axon terminal?
End of an axon where impulse is communicated to next neuron
How does electrical transmission work?
Resting neuron is negative -
When activated it’s positive +
Causing action potential
Creating an electrical impulse that travels down axon to terminal
What is a synapse?
The gap between neurons
Are signals transmitted chemically within the nueron or from neuron to neuron?
Neuron to neuron (across synapse)
When the electrical impulse reaches the end of the neuron what does it trigger?
The realease of a neurotransmitter from synaptic vesicles (tiny sacs)
