Nervous & Endocrine System Flashcards
Explain the difference between NS and ES?
-The NS is a network of cells/ primary communicator based on electrical and chemical signals.
-The ES is based on hormones
What are the 2 main functions of NS?
-Collect, process and respond to info in the environment
- coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
2 main systems within the NS?
Peripheral NS and central NS
Structure and function of central NS?
Brain- centre of conscious awareness, cerebral cortex allows for higher mental thinking
Spinal cord- extension of brain, reflex action, passes message to from brain and connects nerves to PNS
What are the two systems within the PNS?and what do they do?
- autonomic NS, governs vital function e.g. breathing or digestion(involuntary)
- somatic NS, governs muscle movement recovers sensory information
2 subsections of autonomic NS?
Sympathetic NS- fight or flight increases heart rate etc
Parasympathetic NS-calms you e.g decreases breathing rate
Is the ES slower or faster than the NS? The
It works slower but has widespread powerful effects
What are glands ?
Organs which produce hormones
What is the key gland or master gland called? And what does it do?
The pituitary gland controls the real ease of hormones in all other endocrine glands
Hormones are secreted into the … and affect any … in the body which has a … for that particular hormone.
