Nucleus Flashcards
How big is the nucleus compared to other organelles?
It is the largest
When it is stained, what shows?
Darkened patches known as chromatin
What is chromatin and where is it found?
Chromatin is the visible DNA in a non dividing cell
In cell division, what happens to chromatin?
It becomes visible as chromosomes
What is the nuclear envelope?
A structure, made of two membranes with fluid in between, that surrounds the nucleus
What are nuclear pores?
Holes that go right through the nuclear envelope
What is the purpose of rather large nuclear pores?
To allow even relatively large molecules to pass through
Describe a nucleolus (including where it is found)
It is a dense spherical structure that is found inside the nucleus
Name another feature of a nucleus?
Dense masses of nucleoli
What type of membrane is the nuclear envelope?
Double nuclear membrane
What is the nucleoplasm?
A gel like matrix
What does the nucleus house?
Nearly all of the cells genetic material
What is the chromatin or chromosomes purpose?
They consist of DNA and has the instructions for making protein
what does the nucleolus make?
RNA and ribosomes that pass into the cytoplasm
Would it be correct to say the nucleus acts as the control centre of the cell? explain
yes because it produces mRNA and tRNA which contributes to protein synthesis
