Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Flashcards
What is ER?
A system of membranes that runs through the cytoplasm
How are the membranes in ER arranged?
They are formed into flattened membrane bound sacs, called cisternae
The membranes are continuous with what?
The outer nuclear envelope
What is the structural difference between rough ER and smooth ER?
Rough - is studded with ribosomes
Smooth - no ribosomes attatched
What is the function of rough ER? (2)
- It transports proteins made by the attached ribosomes
2. Provides LSA for protein synthesis
Where can ER transport protein? (2)
- Around the cell
2. It can be secreted outside
What is the function of Smooth ER?
It is responsible for steroid and lipid synthesis
Is ER surrounded by a membrane?
Yes
Is it found in eukaryotic or Plant cells?
Both
