Nucleus Flashcards
Nucleus as whole
Contains organisms hereditary info and controls cell activities
Usually 10-20 um in diameter
Nuclear envelope
Double membrane that surrounds nucleus
Often has ribosomes on the surface
Controls entry and exit of materials in an out of the nucleus
Nuclear pores
Allows the passage of large molecules out of the nucleus
Typically around 3000 pores in each nucleus, each 40-100 nm in diameter
Nucleoplasm
Granular jelly like material that makes up the bulk of nucleus
Chromosomes
Protein bound linear dna
Nucleolus
Manufactures RNA and assembles ribosomes
May be more than 1 in nucleus
Function of nucleus
Acts as control centre of cell through production of mRNA and tRNA and protein synthesis
Retains the genetic info in form of DNA and chromosomes
Manufactures RNA and ribosomes
