Nucleic acids Flashcards
1
Q
components of DNA
A
- deoxyribose sugar, phosphate group, nitrogenous base (guanine, cytosine, adenine thymine)
2
Q
components of RNA
A
ribose sugar, phosphate group, nitrogenous base (guanine, cytosine, adenine, uracil)
3
Q
how is a polynucleotide formed
A
- nucleotides join together by phosphodiester bonds in a condensation reaction
4
Q
why is DNA stable
A
5
Q
structure of DNA
A
- double helix with two polynucleotide chains held by hydrogen bonds between complimentary base pairs
6
Q
Process of semi conservative replication
A
- Two strands of DNA are seperated by DNA helicase by breaking the H+ bonds between complimentary bases
- One strand is used as a template strand
- Complimentary base pairing occurs between template strand and free nucleotides
- DNA polymerase joins strands together (adjacent nucleotides) and forms phosphodiester bonds
- 2 identical strands
7
Q
Watson- Crick model of replication
A
8
Q
which bases are purine
A
adenine and guanine
( 2 ring )
9
Q
which bases are pyramide
A
cyrosine and thymine
( 3 ring )
