nuclear radiation Flashcards
describe an atom?
-atoms make up everything
-inside each atom they have a nucleus which contain protons and neutrons
-surrounding the nucleus are electrons
describe an uncharged atom?
An uncharged atom will have an equal number of protons and electrons.
what are 3 types of ionising radiations?
Alpha, Beta and Gamma
Whats ionisation?
The addition or removal of electrons from an atom
Describe an Alpha particle?
-has 2 neutrons and 2 protons
-described as helium nucleus
-positively charged
-paper
Describe a Beta particle?
-consists of fast moving electron
-aluminium
Describe a Gamma particle?
-high energy wave emitted by the nucleus of an atom
-no mass
-led
what are protons?
have a positive charge and found in the nucleus
what are neutrons?
no charge and are found in the nucleus
what are electrons?
negative charge orbit the nucleus
list ionisation podium
alpha, beta, gamma
what charge is alpha attached to and why?
negative because alpha is positively charged
