6
Q

Why doesn’t gamma decay have an equation?

A

Because it’s an electromagnetic wave that occurs as a consequence of alpha or beta decay

Q

What is the radiation that radioactive substances emit?

A

Ionising radiation, meaning that it knocks electrons off them, making them chemically reactive

Q

What is nuclear fission?

A

The splitting of a nucleus; mostly, it occurs when a nucleus is hit by a neutron and it splits into two smaller nuclei

12
Q

What is a fission event?

A

When several neutrons are released, which can cause other fissionable nuclei to split. This then produces a chain reaction of fission events

15
Q

What is the process of radioactive decay?

A

When an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy to make itself more stable by emitting radiation such as an alpha particle, beta particle or gamma ray

16
Q

What is the count rate?

A

The number of radiation particles detected each second

17
Q

What is the most common detector of radiation?

A

The Geiger-Muller tube

18
Q

What is the half life of a sample?

A

The time it takes for half the number of radioactive particles to decay

19
Q

What do we call objects that have been exposed to radiation?

A

Irradiated

20
Q

What is contamination?

A

When unwanted radioactive atoms get onto or into a material or object

21
Q

What is the most damaging radiation outside the body?

A

Beta and gamma, as alpha will most likely be stopped by skin

22
Q

What is the most damaging radiation inside the body?

A

Alpha radiation as it’s the most ionising and will do damage in a very localised area

23
Q

What are the uses of radiation?

A
  • Exploring internal organs using radioactive tracers. The tracer is injected into the patient and flows around the body in the blood to show any blocked areas in the body
  • Gamma radiation in treating cancer. The radiation is carefully focussed to kill cancerous cells and minimise damage to healthy cells (healthy tissues may still be damaged)
