Nuclear Chemistry Flashcards
What is the difference between natural and artificial transmutations?
Artificial transmutations occur when an atom is bombarded with a particle, causing decay. Natural transmutations are not produced by man and do not require a “catalyst.”
What makes an atom radioactive?
A large imbalance between protons and neutrons creates radioactivity.
What is an alpha particle?
An alpha particle is a helium atom.
What is one risk of living near a nuclear power plant?
Nuclear meltdown, waste, radioactivity, etc.
How long does it take nitrogen to decay to 1/16 its original sample?
Nitrogen has a half life of about seven seconds. Four half lives of seven seconds total 28 seconds.
After which element are all elements radioactive?
Anything after and including the 83rd element is radioactive.
What is the decay of radium-226?
226 4 222

Compare fusion and fission.
Fission is the division of large, unstable atoms. Fusion is the joining of smaller atoms.
What are the uses of radioisotopes of iodine and cobalt?
Cobalt can treat cancer. Iodine is used for thyroid conditions.
