NS Term 2 Unit 1: Arrangement of particles Flashcards
What word do scientists use to describe the world around us and us?
Matter.
What is matter?
Matter is very small particles.
What do particles do all the time?
Particles move around all the time.
What determines that the material/substance is a solid, liquid or gas?
The speed and distance that the particles are.
What is a fixed shape?
A solid.
Give 5 examples of solids.
- Chair
- Box
- Pen
- Book
- Basket
Describe how particles in a solid look like.
The particles of a solid are packed closely together. There is very little space between the particles.
The particles move/vibrate in one place.
What is able to flow?
A liquid.
Give 5 examples of liquids.
- Juice
- Water
- Cold drink
- Beer
- Coffee
Describe how particles in a liquid look like.
The particles in a liquid are packed closely together, but do not have a fixed shape.
There are small spaces between the particles.
The particles move around each other.
What fills the space around it?
A gas.
Give 3 examples of gases.
- Oxygen
- Hydrogen
- Carbon dioxide
Describe how particles in a gas look like.
The particles in a gas are far apart from each other and move fast.
There is lots of space between the particles.
The particles move in all directions.
