Notes Package Flashcards
Name the three forms of water.
Water, Ice, Steam
What is the purpose of hydrotherapy?
To use a stimulus to provoke a reaction in the body in order to maintain homeostasis. This creates physiological processes in the body that alter blood flow dynamics.
Where does healing come from in hydrotherapy?
Not from the water itself but from the body’s response to water temperatures applied to it.
How is hydrotherapy used in massage? (3 points)
1) Enhances impairment and wellness-based massage treatments. 2) Important part of self-care for the therapist. 3) To prescribe as home care for the client.
What is the largest organ in the body?
The skin.
What is the term given to the maintenance of body temperature?
Thermoregulation.
What is 37C?
The body’s core temperature.
Where are thermoreceptors located?
Just below the epidermis.
What part of the brain perceives temperature change?
The hypothalamus. Thermoreceptors relay temperature stimulus via the nervous system.
How does the hypothalamus regulate body temperature?
It initiates either heat conserving or heat releasing mechanisms so homeostasis is maintained.
Define vasoconstriction.
Blood vessels narrow in response to COLD to minimize heat loss from the skin’s surfaces.
Name the 3 principals of water.
Thermal, mechanical and chemical.
Which of the body’s systems may be involved in mechanical effects of water?
Lymphatic, Circulatory, Musculoskeletal and Nervous Systems.
How can water act like a solvent in a client’s self-care?
When taken internally it acts like a solvent transporting needed nutrients to the body and removing waste products.
The stimulating, sedating or detoxifying effects of water can be increased by doing this.
Using additives.
