Notes for neuromuscular Flashcards
3 main characteristics of neurons
Excitability
Conductivity
Ability to influence other cells
Summary of GABA
gamma-aminobutyric acid
Inhibitory neurotransmitter distributed in the neurons of cerebral cortex. Contributes to motor control, vision, and regulates anxiety
Summary of glutamate
Excitatory neurotransmitter associated with memory and learning
Summary of dopamine
Controls movement and posture. Regulates mood
Summary of acetylcholine
Excitatory neurotransmitter that triggers muscle contraction and stimulates secretion of hormones. Affects alertness, focus, anger
Summary of norepinephrine
Important for attentiveness, sleeping, dreaming, and learning. Also released as hormone and affects blood vessel contraction/ increased heart rate
Summary of serotonin
Regulates body temperature, sleep, mood, appetite, and pain
Motor cortex
Responsible for goal-oriented movement (tasks), receives information from other lobes of the brain
Basal ganglia
Located within the cerebrum, initiates and regulates body movements
Cerebellum
Regulates details of motor control, balance, smoothness, and coordination
