what is cellulitis
a severe inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin
what pathogens can cause cellulitis
Group A streptococcus, staphylococcus aureus and haemophilus influenza type B
what does an anaerobic form of cellulitis cause
skin necrosis and foul smelling sound
what is necrotising fasciitis?
life threatening infection of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle layers of fascia.
presents as intense pain, rapid spread of cellulitis and systemic symptoms of sepsis/septic shock
what causes candidiasis
candida albicans and other candida species which are normal flora found in skin, mouth, vagina and intestines
how does candida cause infection?
when competing bacterial flora is eliminated. eg by antibacterial antibiotics allowing yeast to overgrow
how does oral candidiasis present as?
raised, white plaques on oral mucosa, tongue or gums. can spread to throat and oesophagus.
if in oesophagus it is a indicator of fill blown AIDs.
how does vaginal candidiasis present as?
itching and burning pain of vulva and vagina accompanied by a white discharge
how is candidiasis treated
nystatin
clotrimazole
