what was the plan?
the two men would lead a rebellion to release Mary Queen of scots as they believed she had better claim to the throne as she was catholic

The duke of Norfolk- joined them in the north

what happened?
an army of 4600 men marched south. Liz struggled to gather an army but soon one of her trusted lords, Earl of sussex raised on army and the rebels split up. 400 rebels were executed including northumberland. Norfolk was imprisoned in the tower and an act was later passed stating that it was now treason to question Elizabeth’s position as queen

what were the political reasons the revolt was launched?
-Liz had weakened the Northern earl’s powers
e.g Earl of westmoreland had lost control over the border with Scotland to Liz’s cousin MQS
-many of the earls were worried about the growing power on the gentry. Liz’s closest followers were ‘sirs’- sir william cecil and not from ‘ancient families likes westmoreland
what were economic reasons the revolt was launched?
Liz had recently taken land from nobles of the north
e.g earl of northumberland had lost copper mines, costing him money
liz refused to sell land to the northern earls to solve her financial problems. they resented losing.
what were religious reasons the revolt was launched?
-earls wanted to re-establish catholiscism as England’s main religion
-catholic rulers. Philip II and the pope were willing to support the revolt
-earls preferred mary and wanted her to be Liz’s successor/ replacement
what were the outcomes of the revolt?
-400 rebels were executed
-Liz strengthend her control of North England by confiscating land belonging to the rebels
-she encouraged the government to take further action over religion.
-The act of uniformity was more strictly enforced and stricter laws were introduced against catholics
