North v South (tarrifs) Flashcards
protective tarrifs -
taxes on imported goods
North Economy:
- industrial trade, factories
- in direct competition with Great Brit
- doesn’t rely on slavery
- “free labor”: paid labor where the employee and boss agreed on the pay check (free ppl no slaves)
South Economy:
- slavery dependant, didn’t consider them human
- agricultural, based on cash crops (tabacco, cotton)
- recieved goods and sold them to Great Brit
Why did the North want protective tarrifs?
- making GB’s goods more expensive would encourage Americans (specifically the South) to buy more local products
- better for economy
Why did the South object to protective tarrifs?
- they bought from GB so they didn’t want their supplier becoming more pricey
