Norman's Design Principles Flashcards
6 Concepts of Norman’s Principle
- Affordances
- Constraints
- Consistency
- Mappings
- Visibility
- Feedback
is a term used to refer to an attribute of an object that allows people to know how to use it
Affordance
it refers to determining ways of restricting the kind of user interaction that can take place at a given moment
Constraint
Constrain possible operations
Ex. different keys fit different locks
Constraint - Physical
Rely on the meaning of a situation to control
actions
Constrain -Semantic
Accepted cultural conventions that control actions
Constraint - Cultural
Relationship between spatial or functional layout of components and the things they affect
Constraint - Logical
This refers to designing interfaces to have similar operations and use similar elements for achieving similar tasks
Consistency/Conceptual Models
This refers to the relationship between controls and their effects in the world.
Mappings
The more visible functions are, the more likely users will be able to know what to do next.
Visibility
is about sending back information about
what action has been done and what has been accomplished, allowing the person to continue with the activity.
