tennants in chief gave soldiers for 40 days in exchange for land

what was the result of the arrangement with barons and their relation ship with knights
by 1100 william could call on 5000 knights
what was another reason aside from an army for the feudal system
it controled inheritance of land- william could take land back when the owner died without an heir

he kept that england was divided into 134 shires but increased the power of the sheriffs

1 honourial court introduced where lord dealt with crimes of property transactions on his land
2 shire courts met more regulalry
3 serious crimes could now only be tried at kings court
4 trial by ordeal ( cold water or hot iron) continued but trial by combat was introduced

1 villages had constable to arrest people and break up fights
2watchmen enforced a curfew
3 after a crime the hue and cry ment everyone had the responsibility to catch the suspect
4 freemen joined tithing groups promising each other to stop each other committing crimes

1 country was divided into 7
2 anglo saxon records were studied and commisioners visited each hunderd
3 some areas were left out eg north as not fully under norman control
4 finding presented to a jury at shire court to check account was accurate
5 findings compiled in 2 accounts and presented to william salisbury in 1086
