A

they waited but wee expensive to feed so were sent home to help with harvest
Hardraada joined with Tostig and landed near York and after battle of Fulford captured York
Harold rgathered army and quickly marched to York
25th September Hardraada’s army was on its way to collect tribute (payment) and hostages. As it was a hot day they left their mail shirts off
Harolds army surprised them at Stamford bridge - Hardraada and Tostig were killed
Vikings returned and promised not to attack again

Harold’s men formed up a hill where their flanks were protected by woodland. They formed a shieldwall - a strong defensive position which stayed strong under attack

sheildwall fell apart when some saxons chased a group of normans pretending to retreat. Harold was killed and william won

A

sept 1066 Hardraada and 8000 vikings invaded england
Hardradababd Godwinsons army met outside york at stamford Bridge. The vikings blocked the bridege but were tricked by a saxon floating actoss the riverin a barrelso the army could cross. Godwinsons army was victorious Hadraada and Tostig wer killed.

A

tiredness- haroldsarmy had to march north to fight at stamford bridge then back to hastings, they had already lost lots of men.

Tactics - Williams army pretended to retreat tempting Harold’s to loose strong defensive position

Army strength William had a greater range of soldiers
Leadership - william was on horse back had a view of the battlefield. Harold on foot was unable to stop his army loosing discipline
