mostly stayed the same but there was a drop in number of free peasants, there were ecconomic changes which led to larger towns
what was village life like under normans
revolved around farming and seasons feb fields ploughed, march sew seeds, april prune trees, june harvest and sheer sheep
what changes were there in farming
sheep farming remained main industry but amount of cultivate land was increasing
what was life like for the poor (5)
had a small strip of land to farm
all work done by hand except ox drawn plough
diet of bread and soup
had small garden to grow veg and graze animals
most were farmers some more specialised blacksmiths and carpenters
what was life like for the rich (4)
lived off rent paid by tennets and their produce
knights spent time practising military skills
diet poor no dairy or veg
many had bad teeth, scurvy and rickets

2 previously free peasants lost freedom as couldnt afford higher rents

what was long term impact of norman conquest on towns (5)
some large towns saw fall in poulation
new towns and trade links developed by castles
castles and cathedrals built in towns so most got new lords
by 1086 there were 18 towns but only 55 of population lived in towns
50 years after conquest market towns grew
how was life in town different to village life (3)
town citizens had special freedoms eg tried by court
wider range of occupations in towns eg bakers barber
opportunities to join a trade in a town
