How did the power of the king change?
A
- Between 1066-87 took control of England
- To establish his royal authority and needed a stronger more centralised approach to crime and punishment
- Used brutal means to supress rebellions in York and East Anglia

A
- Started a massive programme of castle building
- Placed in every part of the kingdom
- Peasants were made to build the castle
- Designated to keep a careful watch on communities to look intimidating

A
- Used if an Anglo-Saxon killed a Norman and the murdered was not captured or executed
- Large sum of money paid by the hundred where the body was found
- Protect authority
- Shared responsibility

What are Forest Laws?
A
- Large stretches of land to be ‘royal forests’
- After a visit to Hampshire, to take control over what he called the Nova Foresta
- Around 40 village communities were evicted

What were the consequences of the forest laws?

- Led to bitterness
- Social crime
- Hired foresters to enforce them and led to castration and blinding
