- Up until 1967 homosexuality was illegal in the UK
- 1967 Sexual Offences Act decriminalised homosexuality for men over 21
- Criminal Justice Act 2005, gave courts the power to give severe punishments for hate crimes

A
- In the 1950s many people from the Commonwealth came to Britain to work
- 1968 Race Relations Act made it illegal to refuse jobs, housing or public services to anyone on the basis of race or ethnic background
- Expanded in 2006, to define spreading racial and religious hate as a crime

- Believed in the 19th century husband’s right and the authorities had no place ‘interfering’
- 1960s campaigns for women’s rights changed attitudes
