Why did the Witan nominate the new King?
A
As Edward left no obvious ruler

What are the 6 ways a claim to the throne can be made?
A
- The king’s son (generally the eldest) would have the strongest claim
- Another male relative, for example the king’s brother
- A male relative of a previous king
- The king could name a successor to take over when he died (post obitum). If this was on his deathbed, it was known as novissima verba.
- The Witan (the leading earls and clergy)
- Claimants could use force to take the throne
