A survey held in 1805-6 that William sent out to every village recording how much everyone owned and how much to tax them
What was the feudal system?
A hierarchy of the people in England based on royal strength. The king owned all the land but gave some to the barons. The barons had to fight for the king and train knights for him. The knights then received some land from the barons.
What were 3 tricks used to keep the enemy out of castles?
- 2.5 metre thick walls on the keep
- curtain wall (with round towers) and a moat surrounding it
- gatehouse with a drawbridge and portcullis
What language did they speak in Norman England?
After the Norman Conquest, French quickly replaced English in all domains associated with power. However, english was still spoken by peasants.
Where was French spoke in Norman England?
French became the de facto language of court and government. The nobility mostly spoke French (because the local elites had been killed or ousted, and replaced by people brought over from Normandy who would be loyal to the new Kings).

The vast majority - the peasants
What did William change about the church?
William imposed a total reorganisation of the English Church after the conquest in 1066. He had secured the Pope’s blessing for his invasion by promising to reform the “irregularities” of the Anglo- Saxon church, which had developed its own distinctive customs.
