What was the significance of the Reichstag Fire?
The Nazis said that the Reichstag fire was started by a Dutch communist called Marinus van der Lubbe. The event provided the justification that Hitler needed to pass an Emergency Decree and suspend the Weimar constitution.
Why was the Night of the Long Knives important?
During the Night of the Long Knives 400 members of the SA were killed. Other potential opponents of the Nazi Party such as the former Chancellor von Schleicher were also killed. There was now no internal opposition to Hitler. Hitler’s most powerful rival, Rohm, was dead. This was essential in the creation of a dictatorship.
Why did some German citizens spy for the Nazis? (3)
- Some were fervent Nazi supporters
- Some hoped to solve a personal vendetta
- Some had personal agendas and hoped to be rewarded
Why were the Nazis not persecuted by the law for putting people in concentration camps in the mid-1930s?
- Judges could not rule against the Nazis. It was compulsory for all judges to join the Nationalist Socialist League for the Maintenance of the Law.
- All decisions in courts were made by the judge along because the Nazis got rid of trial by jury.
