Normal Landings Flashcards
How many miles out from an uncontrolled airport should you announce your intent to land on CTAF? Call tower on controlled airport ditance?
10 miles / Same 10 miles
What altitude should be reached after making initial call on the CTAF?
Traffic pattern
What is the recommended traffic pattern entry?
45 degree angle into the downwind leg
What is the alternate traffic pattern entry?
Cross midfield 500 feet above pattern level, after clear of downwind leg by 2 miles, turn and enter into 45 degree angle of downwind leg
What is the alternate traffic pattern entry if the traffic isn’t busy?
Cross midfield at traffic pattern on crosswind, then enter downwind at 45 degree angle
What should you do once you’ve entered the pattern?
Complete pre-landing checklist (seatbelts, mixture full rich, fuel selector both, landing lights on)
What speed should be reached on downwind?
Reduced speed to white arc (flaps operating range)
Where should power on downwind be reduced to 1400 rpm to start the descent?
When the plane crosses the intended landing point on the downwind leg
What should be done on base if you appear to be too low? Too high?
Make a shallow turn to final / Delay the turn and make a medium bank turn to final
What setting should flaps be set at when lined up on final?
Full flaps
What is the resulting descent rate when flying into a headwind?
The plane will need a slower descent rate flying into the wind because ground speed is slower
What is the resulting descent rate when flying into calm winds?
The plane will need a faster descent rate when compared to flying into a headwind.
On final, how do you increase the rate of descent while maintaining airspeed? Decrease rate of descent while maintaining airspeed?
Reduce power / Increase power
How can you visually tell if you are too high or low on an approach?
By the visual “shape” of the runway outside
What is the “aiming point”?
A reference point on the runway to help you judge your approach angle.
