Non-towered Airport Communications Flashcards
What airspace are non towered airports at?
Class G and Class E
Why should you always fly a standard traffic pattern and announce positions on the radio?
Radio communication at these airports aren’t mandatory, and some airplanes may be flying without a radio.
How can you determine the active runway at a non towered airport?
Check the automated weather, listen to the CTAF to see what other pilots are doing
How is the CTAF noted on a sectional?
With a circled “C” after the CTAF frequency
How do you begin a communication on CTAF?
Airport name and “Traffic” - i.e. Santa Paula Traffic…
How do you begin a communication on UNICOM?
Airport name and “UNICOM” - i.e. Santa Paula Unicom…
If CTAF or ASOS doesn’t provide landing information, how do you determine it?
Call UNICOM for a landing advisory.
How is a call to UNICOM to get a landing advisory typically made
Who you’re calling (Santa Paula Unicom), Who you are (Cessna N_ _ _), Location (10 miles east), Request (landing advisory)
How should a traffic pattern advisory be made on CTAF? (5 steps)
(1) Airport Name (2) Aircraft Type (3) N number (4) Intentions (5) Airport name ((optional))
When should calls to CTAF be made?
Entry into pattern, entries into base, entering into final, clear of the active runway
What should you listen to first on the ramp at a non towered airport?
Automated weather, monitor the local CTAF frequency, radio check may be proper to ensure proper function of radios or proper frequency
How should the transponder be set before takeoff?
1200 (VFR Code) and Altitude mode
When is a transponder required?
Within 30 nm of a class B airport, within class C airspace, above 10000 feet (except within 1200 ft AGL)
What checks need to be done before departure?
(1) Verify transponder set to altitude mode
(2) Announce departure intentions on CTAF
(3) Scan area for traffic
(4) Taxi onto the runway
What does “closed traffic” on a departure announcement on CTAF indicate?
You plan on staying in the traffic pattern after takeoff.
