Normal Labor Flashcards
What is the critical point dilation?
6 cm
How do we define stage 1 of labor?
How do we define stage 2 of labor?
How do we define stage 3 of labor?
Latent is 0 cm to 6 cm
Active is 6-10 cm
10 cm to delivery
Delivery of baby to delivery of placenta
What is the normal time for latent stage for first time mom and multi mom?
Less than 20 hours
Less than 14 hours
What is normal cervical change during active labor for first time mom and multi?
- 2 cm/hr
1. 5 cm/hr
What is normal time for first time mom and multi mom for stage 2?
3 hours
2 hours
Regardless of how many deliveries how long should it take to deliver the placenta?
Less than 30 minutes
What is the actual pathophysiology of cervix changing to be more soft, effaced, dilated and positioned for delivery?
Breakage of disulfide bonds
What is the trigger event for the cervix to undergo these changes?
Fetal head engagement
What is the landmark we use for fetal station and how do we classify if baby is above or below that mark?
Ischial spine
Negative if above and positive is below
What does fetal lie mean and what are the two options?
How baby spine is lined up with moms spine
Longitudinal if they are parallel
Or transverse is baby is perpendicular
What does fetal attitude mean and what is most common?
The relationship of fetal parts to each other. Flexion. Essentially a big ball.
What do we mean by fetal presentation and what are the two main options?
When we say presentation, we mean what is the first presenting part of the fetus or lowest part of the fetus.
Cephalic or breech
What are the 4 main cephalic presentations?
Vertex, full flexed
Sinciput, partially flexed
Brow, partially extended
Face, complete extension
What is frank breech and complete breech and footling breech?
Frank: flex hips and extended knees
Complete: everything is flexed
Footling: at least one hip in extension
