Normal Blood Components Flashcards
What are the types of leukocytes in blood?
Granulocytes: Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
Lymphocytes: B and T cells, plasma cells, NK cells.
Monocytes
Macrophages
What is the role of the neutrophil?
Most common granulytic cell.
First cell recruited to sites of inflammation.
Phagocytose pathogens and release antimicrobial substances from cytoplasmic granules.
What is the role of eosinophils?
Can be phagocytic.
Cytoplasmic granules directly damage pathogens - have a role in allergy and parasitic infections.
What is the role of basophils?
Least common granulytic cell.
NOT phagocytic.
Degranulate to release histamine.
What role to B and T cells play?
B cells mediate production of antigen specific immnoglobulins (antibodies).
T cells have a major role in adaptive immune response.
What role do NK cells play?
Cytotoxic - attack other cells without need for tagging by MHC or antibodies.
Release cytotoxic granules that kill cells through lysis or apoptosis.
What role to plasma cells play?
Antibody factories.
What role do monocytes/macrophages play?
Monocytes differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells to remove pathogens and present antigen to lymphoid tissue.
What do neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils and moncytes look like?
