Nonsystems Flashcards
Intermittent Compression Therapy and Lymphedema/Arterial Insufficiency
ICT should NOT be used w/ arterial insufficiency as it would only increase peripheral resistance. ITC is appropriate for lymphedema in the absence of arterial insufficiency
Basic Life Support - Actions
Emergency Medical Service Activation - Chest Compressions - then rescue breathing
Moist Heat and Malignancy
Moist heat is not appropriate for edematous extremities as it may increase edema, blood flow and perfusion to the malignant cells
Electrical Stimulation and Malignancy
CONTRAINDICATED due to stimulation/growth of malignant cells
Cryotherapy and Malignancy
not contra-indicated, and may have beneficial effects on pain in the case of malignancy
Interpretation of one-tailed T-test w/ alpha set
if statistical value is greater than critical value, null is rejected. the probability this occurred by chance is < alpha%
Ultrasound in children
over epiphyseal plates is a precaution, and often not the best choice of tx
Joint Mobilization and Knee Pain
while gentle ROM may be indicated when joint pain exists, precautions related to the etiology of the pain should be considered. if the p! in the knee is related to joint effusion, then joint mob is contraindicated
Cold water whirlpool and children
most appropriate for distal extremities but would require constant supervision in small children secondary to risk of drowning
Mann-Whitney U Test
Nonparametric Test designed to test the null hypothesis with 2 independent samples from the same population.
ANOVA
used when there are 3 groups to compare
student’s t test
used to compare 2 means, with NORMAL distribution
kruskal wallis test
used with 3 or more independent samples
aspiration precautions
thin liquids are more likely to be aspirated than solids, and swallowing should be facilitated with chin tucked
