Contraindications: Cancer Patients and Exercise

A
  • Day of intravenous chemotherapy or within 24 hours of tx
  • Severe rxn to radiation
  • Acute infection or febrile illness >100 F
  • Severe nausea, vomitting, diarrhea w/in 24-36 hours, dehydration, poor nutrition
  • Unusual or extreme fatigue, muscular weakness, recent bone pain
  • Chest pain, rapid or slow HR, elevated BP, swelling of ankles
  • Severe dyspnea, pain on deep breath, cough/wheezing
  • Dizzy/lightheaded, disorientation, confusion, blurred vision, ataxia
  • Pts w/ low PLT may have SOB, excessive fatigue, angina, petechiae, purpura, ecchymoses, hematuria, anemia, and hematochezia.
  • Pts w/ extremely low PLT (<10k) may experience spontaneous bleeding

    • UNRESPONSIVE = IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION, glucagon injection, or IV glucose

  • Pulse: rapid, weak Fruity (acetone) breath Hyperglycemic coma
  • RESPONSE IMMEDIATE MEDICAL TREATMENT

Red Flags: ESRF

A
  • Dizziness, HA, anxiety, memory loss, inability to concentrate, convulsion and coma
  • HTN, DOE, heart failure
  • Chronic pain
  • Edema peripheral or pulmonary
  • Muscle weakness: peripheral neuropathy, cramping, restless
  • Skeletal: osteomalacia, osteoporosis, bone pain, fx
  • Skin: pallor, ecchymosis, pruritis, dry skin
  • Anemia, tendency to bleed easily
  • Decreased endurance functional loss
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
