Nonodontogenic Cysts Flashcards
What tissue does a nasolabial cyst arise from?
Lacrimal duct epithelium
Where do you typically find a nasolabial cyst?
The maxillary labial vestibule lateral to the midline
What color is a nasolabial cyst?
Yellow
What affect can a nasolabial cyst have on the surrounding area?
Obliterate the nasolabial fold and raise the ala
What tissue is found in a nasolabial cyst?
Pseudo stratified squamous epithelium with goblet cells
May also see squamous metaplasia
Where does a palatine papilla cyst develop?
In the soft tissue overlying the incisive foramen
Describe palatine papilla cysts
Multiple small swellings that may be blue in color
What tissues make up palatine papilla cysts?
Pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium
Simple columnar epithelium
What is contained within a teratoid cyst?
Cell from all three germ layers
Skin appendages (hair, sweat glands), connective tissue elements (bone, blood vessels), endoderm
How does a dermoid cyst differ from a treated cyst?
Typically has skin appendages but is missing one of the three layers
Where do most dermoid cysts occur?
In the midline floor of the mouth although some are displaced laterally
How large can a dermoid cyst become and what is the consistency?
Up to 12cm, doughy with possible pitting
What tissues are found in a dermoid cyst?
Orthokeratinized stratified squamous epithelium with a prominent granulosum. Keratin and dermal appendages are also seen
How does an epidermoid cyst differ from a dermoid cyst?
Lacks dermal appendages
What three types of cysts are considered newborn cysts?
- Small white/yellow cysts
- Palatal cysts
- Gingival cysts
