Non-Verbal Communicaton Flashcards
What happened in the Fisher. Rytting and Hesling study?
The librarian touched some students on the hand and didn’t touch others when handing them books.
The touched group had a more positive response towards the librarian and the library altogether. Touch has an impact on how we feel about others
What happened in the study regarding pupil dilation?
Participants were shown a picture of a lady without dilated pupils and a picture of a lady with dilated pupils.
The majority of the participants said they found the lady with the dilated pupils more attractive although they couldn’t explain why.
What happened in age and personal space study?
Willis observed 800 people in a range of social situations.
He concluded that people stood closer to others who were of a similar age and that age has an affect on personal space.
What happened in the Zahn status study?
Zahn observed people of different status talking to one another. People of similar status tended to stand closer together and people of different status didn’t have as much closeness to others who were similar to themselves.
What happened in the Sackeim brain hemispheres study?
Sakeim researched the difference between facial expressions and the hemispheres of the brain.
A picture of someones face was cut in half that showed different emotions. The participants said that they preferred the left side of the face because they thought it was warmer.
What happened in Argyle’s dark glasses study?
Aim: To see if wearing dark glasses effects the flow of conversation between two people.
Method: The confederate of the experiment talked to participants sometimes with dark glasses and sometimes without. The breaks in conversation were measured.
Results: When the glasses were worn there were many gaps and the conversation was very fragmented and frequently lost fluidity between the confederate and the participant.
Conclusion: Eye contact greatly affects the flow of conversation between two people.
What happened in the personality type and personal space study?
Aim: To see if personality type affects personal space between people.
Method: People took personality tests to determine their characteristics and traits then they were made to go and talk to someone. How close the people sat together was measured.
Results: The people with similar personalities tended to sit closer together than people with personalities that were less like the other persons.
Conclusion: Personality type affects how close people sit next to each other and is a factor with personal space.
Name some factors that affect personal space.
Age
Status
Personality Type
Culture
What happened in the culture and personal space study?
They observed people of different cultures speaking with each other and measured the personal space they left between each other. They found that in Arabic cultures people tend to stand much closer together while Westerners stood further apart and were more reserved in how much space they left between each other.
Summer concluded that culture greatly affects levels of personal space.
Outline two practical implications of research into Non-Verbal Communication
People of de-similar ages tend to stand further apart.
Pupil dilation has an unconscious but powerful effect on attraction.
People of Arabic cultures will stand closer together while people of Western cultures will stand further apart.
